Tasty tofu
Tofu for the meat-and-potatoes crowd
If you like tofu just about any way, I applaud you. Maybe the world would be a better place if we all ate more soybean curd from time to time.
Getting to like it takes a bit of work for people who didn’t grow up eating it. But there’s one preparation that I recently saw hit the mark with dedicated meat-and-potatoes people.
It’s called “General Tso’s tofu,” a takeoff on the American chinese favorite of battered chicken in spicy sweet sauce. At Shanghai, 21 Main St., Tonawanda (694-1818), they give soft tofu the General Tso treatment. It’s a worthy addition to our search for decent Chinese dishes in Western New York.
You don’t need batter to get a crust on deep-fried tofu, so the resulting dish is a little lighter. The spicy sweet sauce is the same, and with only a few sprigs of broccoli and some onion, there’s not much to support this as “healthy food.”

Look, ma! They’s green stuff in that there dish!
But the meat-and-potatoes guys I fed it to scarfed up every last bit. At $7.25 for a good-sized vat, if you want to try it you don’t have much to lose.

I like tofu, but my husband, who is not a meat and potatoes guy, hates it. Maybe I could sneak this by him? It looks wonderful.
I’ll try.

Just finished this off about 5 minutes ago (well, nearly finished … even the “lunch special” packs enough rice and tofu to induce the 2 p.m. coma).
My only advice/comment is that this stuff is waaaaay better when hot and fresh than after sitting on a newsroom desk for 15 minutes. In any case, a great find.
