Sabres logoThe Buffalo Sabres made it to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders tonight.

The boys from Buffalo won the best-of-seven series 4-1, but they have not been playing sharp, as a cohesive group, the way they did for long stretches of the regular season. Tonight they were up 3-0 before some of the players got lazy. The Islanders almost tied the game with 9 seconds left.

That’s odd. I should be thrilled the team has won one of the four series it would need for the National Hockey League championship that would mean so much to this city. The Sabres probably will play the New York Rangers in the second round, and should be able to beat that team too.

I guess it’s the waiting all year for this moment, contrasted with the lacksadaisical performance of this talented but young team. I dearly want to see the Sabres bring a championship to a city and fans that deserve one, after all these years. Still, I feel vaguely dyspeptic, as though I’m not going to like what comes next.
