The pit ham at Suzy-Qs threatened to create a category by itself

Here’s the link to my barbecue story in First Sunday.

The pictures in the previous item are from Kentucky Greg’s on George Urban Blvd. in Depew, which took top honors in spare ribs.

Donnie’s Smokehouse on Jefferson in Buffalo ruled in baby back ribs.

Top brisket was One Eyed Jack’s in Lockport.

Look at the bark – that’s barbecue-speak for crust – on Smokin’ Tom’s pulled pork

I found the best pulled pork at Smokin’ Tom’s in Springville.

The places that you don’t see listed in my story are not worthy of mention alongside these smoked meat artisans.

  • So, when do we get to have lunch?

  • Do any of these places serve a decent microbrew (or several)? I’m very sad at the prospect of having to drink Bud with my Q.

  • Joe,

I had Flying Bison Aviator Red at Suzy-Qs. One-Eyed Jack’s and Kentucky Greg’s probably do, but I cannot remember for sure. Smokin’ Tom’s doesn’t serve alcohol, if I recall correctly.

  • What about all of the bbq joints in the area that are not mentioned in the article? Have they been excluded because they weren’t good, or is there another reason?

  • What about all of the bbq joints in the area that are not mentioned in the article? Have they been excluded because they weren’t good, or is there another reason? There are so many of them, did you eat at every single one.

  • I went through the newpaper’s archives and visited every place we knew of, then I searched the Internet, Rapoport’s site, and asked around. If I missed a place, people are keeping it a secret to themselves. I went to 15 places specifically for the story, and there were two more I had been to recently on my own.

The places that I went to and did not mention are places I would not recommend to friends. That’s the way we decided to do it. It was deemed less abrasive than griping about the second-tier places.

  • Andy,

Glad to hear Suzy Q’s has Flying Bison. They were closed on the 4th of July when we went out, so we wound up at One Eyed Jack’s, which was great, just as your review suggests. But the beer did suck, the best being Yuengling (blah).

Presumably, a certain recently opened BBQ place on Elmwood has some good beer, but by implication, doesn’t serve very good food!

  • Sorry to say that Flying Bison Aviator Red….
sucks! Really wanted to like it though, because of the Buffalo connection…
Basically anything by Souther Tier Brewing blows Flying Bison away.
Best BBQ wings….Buffalo Tap Room on Eggert Rd…& awesome beer selection to boot!

  • Topgun,

Agree with you about Southern Tier Brewing, although I don’t think Flying Bison sucks that much. FB even had an excellent cask conditioned double IPA at last year’s IPA fest at Cole’s. Know where to get good beer in Bfo, but not at the same time as BBQ.

  • I thought the food at the BBq place on Elmwood was fantastic. And thats about all they have on tap is micro brews, of which was the perfect complement to the food. Especially the giant beef ribs, I never seen anything like them before. Just my opinion though.
