Open season on Farmers Markets: Browsing the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market, Buffalo

At $5, the first sweet cherries of the year from Tom Tower’s farm were oh so worth it.
We headed down to Bidwell Parkway on Saturday morning, looking to see if there was a reason to go downtown to the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market instead of heading to North Tonawanda’s market on Saturday mornings.
Our visit didn’t [...]

That’s right, I said ‘Buffalo style sushi’: Seabar, Buffalo

A Polish guy can cut sushi too. You got a problem with that?
When you tell people there’s free sushi, look out. My darling wife Kathy and I arrived at 475 Ellicott St., just north of the Washington Market, to find the street blocked off and a crowd of people milling about, with their eyes on [...]

The good German: Scharf’s Schiller Park, Buffalo

Crunchy, meaty, and satisfying, this wiener schnitzel is worth the trip to Scharf’s.
One of the last bastions of Buffalo’s once-thriving German community is a restaurant called Scharf’s Schiller Park, named for its proximity to the park, near the border of Buffalo and Cheektowaga. (34 S. Crossman St., Buffalo; 716-895-7249)

Let’s say you have $5 and an hour for lunch. You could line up behind [...]

The offerings were a bit sparse last Thursday, but the word is that Saturday the first strawberries will be available in markets, in small quantities.
The Buffalo News has published a guide to local farmer’s markets. Now there’s no excuse to get your derriere out the door Saturday morning and see what the farmers down the [...]

Bit of a crash

No one died, but the jet is a writeoff. (Photo by Flickr user bocakey.)
My computer went *bink* and died on me Friday night. I paid Dell tech support $40 to troubleshoot the problem. The Indian fellows made matters even worse, leaving it a blinking hulk and telling me, “Sir, it appears that your memory and hard [...]

Video: Grilled asparagus with roasted garlic aioli

Asparagus has such a delicate reputation – it’s a surprise to learn it loves the fire.
If you haven’t caught the latest Elements video, it’s a celebration of one of the first local bounties – asparagus.
We’ve gotten bored of asparagus now that we can find it year-round in the supermarket. But for 10 months of the [...]
